HEIDI’S PHILOSOPHY

“If a fish judges itself by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

What if the fish isn't the problem?

We don’t yell at a fish for not climbing a tree. We get it some water.

We don’t get angry at a polar bear for sweating in the desert. We find it an iceberg… or air conditioning at least.

So why do we keep doing this to kids?

Most homes, schools and workplaces are built for monkeys. When a fish can’t climb, we ask what’s ‘wrong’ with them, and they don’t know either. So we punish and shame, when what they really need is help.

Strong-willed, sensitive and neurodivergent kids aren’t broken or “being difficult.” They’re fish in itchy monkey suits, out of water too long and being asked to climb faster than feels safe.

Kids do well if they CAN, not if they WANT to.

No tree can cater for every animal. But we can get curious about who’s in front of us. Maybe that fish needs a bucket of water, a trip to the pool at 1pm, or a school closer to the sea.

It starts with swapping “What’s wrong with you?” for “What do you need?”

I want every child to feel like they belong. Not because they’ve squeezed themselves into a shape that fits, but because the people around them made room for who they are.

TOPICS

Sessions for your staff and your parent community: 'Finally an approach that actually works'

Every classroom has kids whose behaviour is frustrating, exhausting, or disruptive. Heidi teaches educators to move beyond behaviour management into genuine understanding – drawing on polyvagal theory, neurodivergence research, and 20+ years of clinical insight. Heidi teaches strategies and concepts that change the lens through which you see the child, which enables you to finally support them effectively and improve the environment.

When Behaviour IS The Message

Challenging behaviour is rooted in the nervous system: kids have feelings coming up and don’t know what to do with them. Heidi shows staff and parents how to focus on the need rather than the behaviour, get curious, and teaches adults how to ‘translate’ what the behaviour is trying to communicate.

Punishment, consequences and sticker charts don’t build skill. Staff learn how shame drives behaviour, why kids need to feel safe so their brain can learn, and how connection and prevention build regulation.

Differently wired bodies need different stuff. Heidi shows staff and parents how to accommodate neurodivergent kids, from fidgets and wobble seats to brain breaks, so they’re not working so hard to keep it together.

Learn how to best support kids who are differently wired, and feel confident in your approach.

Start the year with the only sandbox you can control: yourself. Staff reset their expectations, learn to be a safe container for kids and parents, and practise hard conversations that immediately lower the tension.

Discover how we can model effective management of anger and stress in order to help our children do the same.

Unpack ‘The Inner Critic’, learn how to befriend the ‘Not Good Enough’ voice and improve self-worth and self-doubt.

A powerful re-frame on why self-care is mission critical and how to create a new mindset you actually implement.

Cracking The Code On The Kid Who Didn't Come With A Manual

Your child isn’t broken, and you’re not failing. You might just be speaking different languages.

Most parents are saying all the right things, just not in the language their child understands. And strong-willed, neurodivergent and “spicy” kids rarely speak in words. They speak in meltdowns, shutdowns, refusals and slammed doors.

Heidi translates. She helps parents decode what their child’s behaviour is really saying, then gives them practical, shame-free tools rooted in nervous system science to respond in a way their child can actually hear.

The result? Parents see their kids differently, and kids finally feel seen.

Exhausted, overwhelmed and tired of repeating yourself? Parents learn to stay calm under pressure, repair after they’ve lost it, and build the kind of connection that makes kids want to listen.

Anxiety is a physiological response, so you have to speak the body’s language. Heidi teaches a bottom-up approach: regulate the body first, and give kids choice so resilience and confidence can grow.

Identify the most common anxiety challenges, how these impact us, and how to overcome them with new skills.

Learn the five key traits to implement that create resilience and a happier life, connected relationships, and less anxiety.

Explore why our children are so connected and learn how to stay safe in a digital world.

Kids don’t learn friendship skills from “just ignore them.” Parents discover how to guide their child through the tricky stuff, from exclusion to unkindness, so they grow into confident, kind and emotionally strong friends.

Discover what’s important to your teenager, why autonomy is key, what to focus on and what to let go.

Around age 12, kids fire us as ‘parents’, (haha!) and we can re-apply as ‘consultants’.

Clamp down harder and you risk losing both jobs, as teens turn to lying and secrecy to avoid getting caught.

Heidi shows parents how to earn the consultant role by leading with curiosity and connection instead of compliance and control, so teens keep coming to you with the hard stuff and grow into honest, resilient adults.

Boundaries are what’s okay and what’s not okay. Heidi shows parents how to set the limit, sit with big feelings and push through the guilt that comes with holding a boundary as teenagers push for independence.

Starting school, changing schools or moving up a year. Heidi shows parents how to give kids choice, autonomy and connection along the way, so a brain that hates change feels more in control, and they know they’re not alone.

ABOUT HEIDI

Meet Heidi Rogers

Heidi Rogers is a psychotherapist and speaker with more than 20 years in mental health… which is a polite way of saying she’s sat across from a lot of humans mid-meltdown and has the “nothing you say will surprise me” face to prove it!

She helps parents and educators break old patterns and find new ways of being that hold up under pressure – with a particular soft spot for parents and educators raising “Spicy kids,” her term for the strong-willed, challenging and neurodivergent children.

Outside the therapy room and speaking circuit, Heidi lives in Australia with her husband, two daughters, two dogs and one scaredy cat – a household that, by her own admission, gives her more than enough  material to learn from.
